Harvesting heat
Whilst benefitting from high levels of insulation, some passive solar gains, and a wood-burner, the primary heating system is a ground source heat pump providing hot water and underfloor heating. The field previously used for grazing now has another crop; heat. The sun heats the ground over the summer months and its thermal mass holds its temperature throughout the winter when the pipes of chilled water flowing through the ground pick up that residual heat before it is then reclaimed by the heat-pump. Whilst looking quite drastic when first dug, the trenches will eventually be covered with green grass and its underground harvest will be secret.
