Spalted Beech

IMG_3453.jpeg

Bounding the west side of the site is a Beech hedge. Due to the close proximity to the road this has to be carefully managed and cared for. This year the lower growth has been laid. The taller trees have been checked and this tree was identified as signifcantly rotted inside. This fungal decay is one of the vulnerabilities of Beech, but also gives rise to the beautoful “spalting” which can be utilised in furniture and internal finishes.
